Concert series celebrates 10 years

Carneval Strings

What is 10 years old, has 15 heads, 30 legs, 150 fingers, is both male and female and has the potential to inspire over a thousand people living in Victoria to laugh, clap, tap their feet, sing, dance and be happy?
It is the Café Culture Series, boasting 14 talented musicians and a first class comedian, set to kick off its 2009 season at Stawell Entertainment Centre this Sunday.
The Café Culture Series – formerly the Café Concert Series – has been delivering a diverse range of quality entertainment to regional Victorian towns for 10 years. The subscription series program consists of four shows spread throughout the calendar year, each of which offers a special live experience that is shared in 13 regional Victorian towns.
First up in the series is Carneval Strings, a dynamic, traditional string quartet who present a range of music from baroque and classical, seasoned with Latin American, lively 50s and 60s swing jazz and European folk tunes. The essence and passion of Hungarian folk music becomes obvious as the two Hungarian violinists wander through the audience entertaining the listeners.
Program curator Mary Souness said the audience was guaranteed a knockout performance that combined sophistication and fun with a few surprises.
“This is the first time in the history of the series that we are presenting classical music,” Mary said.
“I think Carneval Strings is the perfect choice for introducing classical music into the program as their repertoire also includes some very fiery Hungarian tunes and some beautifully performed 50s jazz,” she said.
“It’s a blissful combination the audience will hopefully enjoy immensely.”
Carneval Strings perform at 5pm on Sunday. Also featuring in the series later this year are one-man comedy Last Drinks, super group Welcome Strangers and Dixieland jazz outfit New Melbourne Jazz Band.
A season subscription is available now for $70, a saving of $30. Tickets are on sale at Stawell Library. The Café Culture Series 2009 is brought to you by “Just Shows To Go” and proudly presented by Stawell Regional Arts.
