Help for war veterans

Horsham RSL president John Brondsema and Vietnam VVAA Wimmera sub-branch president Barry McClure.

The personal welfare of Wimmera war veterans will be canvassed at a meeting in Horsham next week.
Conducted by the Victorian branch of the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia as part of a statewide series, the June 4 meeting is open to veterans of all wars.
“While we are a Vietnam Veterans Association and we want to ensure that we reach as many Vietnam Veterans as possible and get our vitally important welfare message to them and their families, the information sessions will also be of great value to older veterans and to our peacemakers, peacekeepers and younger veterans,” VVAA spokesman John Ockwell said.
“We extend an invitation for all to attend these very important information sessions, irrespective of whether they are members of our association or not.”
VVAA Wimmera sub-branch will host the session at Horsham RSL Club next Thursday at 4pm.
Branch president Barry McClure said the welfare presentations had taken on even more importance since the Black Saturday bushfires.
“The association came into contact with veterans who were not prepared and although they had been living in the area for some time we had no knowledge of them,” Barry said.
“We want all local Vietnam Veterans, their partners and other veterans to attend the sessions so that we can assist them to improve their own personal welfare circumstances,” he said.
“We encourage them to become involved in and known to the ex-service community and explain to them the services available and how to access them, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and counselling services.
“As well as the bushfires, we also have veteran families struggling with the long-term effects of drought and the tough economic times. We want them to know that they are not alone and see how we might be able to help”
Other Victorian ex-service organisations such as Legacy, TPI Association, RSL, Partners of Veterans, Peacemakers and Peacekeepers Veterans Association and the Veterans and Veterans Family Counselling Service will be represented and pensions and welfare officers will be in attendance. Light refreshments will be provided.
