High standard at awards

Ararat Legacy president Colin Holmes, public speaking award winners Caitlyn Hamence and Madeline Meek from Lake Bolac Secondary College, runner-up Tess McGee and MC Legatee Gordon Archer.

A high standard was set by the 17 students who presented at Legacy’s junior public speaking awards at the Midland Theatre Complex in Ararat recently.
Year seven and eight students representing Ararat, Marian, Beaufort, Lake Bolac and Stawell Secondary Colleges all presented a five minute prepared speech and then a two minute impromptu speech.
For the prepared speech the topics chosen were of a broad range, well researched and of a high standard.
There were two winners on the day – Madeline Meek and Caitlyn Hamence – both from Lake Bolac College and they will now progress to the preliminary final in Bendigo on September 9.
Runner-up was Tess McGee from Ararat College.
First time MC Legatee Gordon Archer from Melbourne Legacy chaired the proceedings, while the panel of judges included Lester Harris from Beaufort as chief judge, Frank Kitchen and Lee Albert, both from Ararat had the difficult task of selecting the winners.
This is the fourth year of the awards in Ararat and each year the interest and standard of presentations has gone up a notch.
“All students are to be congratulated on their high standard of presentations, with very interesting topics and the way in which they presented to the audience,” chief judge Gordon Archer said.
“It is not easy to stand up in front of a group of people and all students presented well. They are all winners for participating and we are all rewarded by listening to the wide range of topics they presented.”
Ararat Legacy, with financial support from the Victorians Veterans Fund Grants Program are proud that they have been able to offer the annual awards in conjunction with Melbourne Legacy and will be supporting the two winners to the preliminary final next month
