Lost pets start school

RUSTY FINDS A HAVEN: Save A Pet''s Maxine Frahn with Haven Primary School junior council members Bailey Logan, Christopher Eagle, Maddie Ervin, Michael Hayden, Ben Rowan and Sarina Quick with Rusty.

Reading The Weekly Advertiser’s column Around The Pounds has started a small school thinking of big ways to help the region’s homeless animals.
And the first step for Haven Primary School students was to organise a fundraiser for the column’s coordinating group, not-for-profit organisation Save A Pet.
At the suggestion of student Sarina Quick, junior school council members ran a “wheels” day where students could decorate anything with wheels and bring it to school in return for a donation.
The result for the 70-student school was an impressive windfall of $79.80 for the fledgling Save A Pet group.
When the school contacted Save A Pet founder Maxine Frahn to inform her of the fundraiser, she was blown away.
“I was just floored when they contacted us,” Maxine said.
“It was so unexpected to think that a school would make this sort of effort for our organisation,” she said.
“Their hard work in raising this money means another animal will be given a second chance at finding a new home.”
To show her appreciation, Maxine and fellow Save A Pet member Jill Szymanski visited the school to deliver a certificate of appreciation and answer questions about the organisation.
They also brought a special guest – a lively seven-year-old Corgi cross named Rusty who found a new home through Save A Pet after being “too much” for his original owners to handle.
He was, of course, a big hit with the young Haven students.
“I just wanted to thank the staff and students for their generous donation,” Maxine said.
“I’m especially pleased that the young people of Haven have thought about the plight of homeless animals,” she said.
“I am sure such kindness means they will be responsible pet owners of the future.”
Since September last year, Save A Pet has helped more than 40 animals find new homes.
