Kan-do attitude marks 30 years

It started as a one-off event to officially launch the Wimmera River beautification project and 30 years later the Kannamaroo Festival is still going strong as a favourite with families.
Organiser Kevin Dellar said Kannamaroo was the result of former Local Government Minister Digby Crozier’s 1979 visit to Horsham to launch the river project.
“They asked us to put on an event for the offcial opening of the river beautification project,” Mr Dellar said.
“Back then it was all based around the river and water activities but after a while we moved it to the main street,” he said.
Drought took its toll on the festival but the move to a Friday night Firebrace Street carnival saw it remain an anticipated annual event.
“It’s really become the launch of the Christmas season in the region,” Mr Dellar said.
“Families fill up the main street and just have a great time catching up with friends they may not have seen for a while,” he said.
“It’s the great community attitude to the event that has kept it going strong for so long.”
Mr Dellar said tomorrow night’s festival had a few suprises as well as the launch of the 50 Years of Wimmera Rock celebration.
“You’ll see a few different things – some flame throwers, a range of new Harley Davidsons, a fashion parade – among others,” he said.
“It’s not meant to be anything ‘magnifique’ but just an enjoyable night with plenty for the kids to do.”
Mr Dellar said the festival would continue as long as the community continued to support it.
