Landcare groups join forces in fight against weeds

Government agencies have joined forces to help Wimmera Landcare groups capitalise on government funding in a fight against environmental weeds.
Wimmera Catchment Management Authority and the Department of Primary Industries have prioritised regional weed issues for groups as part of Victorian Government Landcare funding.
Wimmera CMA works coordinator Barry Sullivan said the authority would distribute $287,974 of $3.38 million in Second Generation Landcare Grants between 19 Wimmera groups.
“Funding this round will continue to focus primarily on the ever-increasing need to control weeds and rabbits,” he said.
“This year Wimmera CMA and the DPI have closely aligned to help groups fight weeds. These include regionally prohibited and controlled weeds, weeds of national significance and priority weeds.”
Mr Sullivan said while the weed fight was a priority, an increase in rabbits in the Wimmera meant some groups would spend most of their grant money on warren-ripping programs.
Mr Sullivan said a Technical Assessment Panel, made up of Wimmera CMA and DPI staff, assessed each Landcare group grant application.
“Unfortunately, group-funding needs exceed funding availability each year. This means the panel must carefully consider the amount of funding each group receives based on regional natural-resource management priorities,” he said. “In this round, $20,000 in funding will go towards Landcare group capacity building, insurance costs and maintenance. The remaining $287,000 is for on-ground works.”
State Government funding is available for Wimmera Landcare or community groups affiliated to Landcare networks. For information on Wimmera projects call Barry Sullivan at Wimmera CMA on 5382 1544.
