Roos firm as legitimate challenger

TEAM EFFORT: the Southern Roos continue to emerge as the biggest threat to Kalkee, with quality players such as Matt Ward

At the start of the season, many Horsham District Football League supporters continued to rate Harrow Balmoral as the main challenger to Kalkee’s domination of the competition.
Fans noted early that the Southern Roos still boasted a quality line-up but would need to reshuffle the team considerably to get the best from their list.
Little has changed and if finals experience counts for anything, Harrow Balmoral will enter the series with a degree of confidence.
Coach Brent Penny, holding down a key forward post, and in-and-under Matt Ward are covering familiar ground and might well be among key team barometers.
How well the experienced players can provide guidance to rotating midfield youngsters such as Callum Hobbs, Anthony and Michael Close and Hamish Ellis will count for plenty.
The Southern Roos have had some big ‘outs’ this year. Simon Close’s sojourn to Canada removed sting from the goal-to-goal line and Cam Penny’s absence with injury all season left a gaping hole.
But the significant aspect for the Roos this season is the team has finished second on the ladder without them.
Ian Close is emerging as one of the best young ruckmen in the competition, Gareth Egan has been a solid contributor and Tom Anson is a wildcard.
In attack, James Staude has led the charge, although there has been speculation about his fitness, and Josh Vickery might push down and provide a secondary option.
Competition analysts suggest the Roos might still lack speed and despite Larry Leeming holding down centre half back, consider the team’s defensive lines a potential Achilles heel.
However, Harrow Balmoral is right in it and will consider significant losses to Kalkee during the season as ancient history.
