Celebration for centre

Volunteers, politicians and leading health and departmental representatives will be among guests at Wimmera Hearing Society’s 30th anniversary dinner in Horsham on Monday night.
The society, which provides services and support for hearing-impaired people across western Victoria, will celebrate the occasion at Cheeky Fox restaurant at 6.30pm.
A concerned group of people, with support from the media and politicians of the time, formed the society in 1981.
The society supported and provided limited services across the Wimmera for 18 years until 1998 when it gained funding to expand the service to a wider region.
In 2000, the Department of Health and Ageing provided further funding and the service now covers the western half of Victoria.
In 2009 the society replaced its bus with a mobile testing unit, allowing it to travel further afield and continually expand its services.
Society manager Sue Ward said volunteers who helped two paid workers provided the most unique and appreciated section of the service.
“Without the 25 volunteers based across country Western Victoria, this service would not be able to function. There are about 10 volunteers based in the Wimmera that man the office and assist on field trips and another 15 who assist when we are visiting their regions,” she said.
“Wimmera Hearing Society continues to give the general public free hearing assessments, referral, communication strategies, and has a device loan system available from its Roberts Avenue office in Horsham.
“The society remains neutral, dealing with problems people have with their hearing-aid providers, lobbying for better services and educating the general public and service clubs about deafness.”
