Commissioner set to visit region

Wimmera people have an invitation to share their thoughts on how to secure a sustainable future with Environmental Sustainability Commissioner Professor Kate Auty next Wednesday.
The Commissioner has invited the public to a gathering at Horsham Civic Centre reception room from 7.15pm to 9.15pm.
Her visit is part of a tour of the region where information she gathers will inform and influence the work of the Commissioner’s Office.
The State Government has appointed Prof Auty for five years to prepare The State of the Environment Report, an examination of Victoria’s natural, economic and social environment.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Ryan Smith will table the report in State Parliament.
The Commissioner’s charter is to also encourage decision making that promotes ecological wellbeing and generate community discussion about what people know and what ideas they have to achieve a sustainable ecosystem.
The Commissioner’s Office also audits government agencies every year to track environmental management.
Professor Auty said blending science and policy with the knowledge and concerns of district people was essential in gaining an understanding of how Victorians could adapt to the effects of climate change.
“This applies economically, socially and environmentally,” she said.
“I want to begin and to continue conversations about good science communication focussing on science, policy and people; to explore new opportunities to network and share information with each other and to recognise that the community is as much a knowledge producer as it is a user.”
The tour starts in Halls Gap on Tuesday and visits are planned for Stawell, Natimuk, Nhill, Kaniva and Dimboola.
