Support training for flood teams

Regional leaders overseeing Wimmera communities still dealing with the impact of floods in January can learn more about helping and supporting people, in Horsham on Tuesday.
The Human Services Department and beyondblue: the national depression initiative have joined forces to put on the three-hour training workshop from 6pm at Grains Innovation Park.
Department’s acting regional flood-recovery manager Katherine Gillespie said the January floods had an impact on communities in many ways, including emotional health.
“We are inviting people to develop their skills so they can help other people deal with the emotional impacts of the flood in simple and practical ways,” Ms Gillespie said.
She said people from a variety of backgrounds were welcome to participate in the workshop which aimed to equip leaders with basic skills in understanding emotional health problems.
“People who might be interested in taking part might have roles such as a footy coach, a hairdresser, a manager, an employer or al publican – just for example,” Ms Gillespie said.
“In three hours you will learn how to help people to find the support they need. These skills will help provide relevant information that can assist the local community in the months, and sometimes years, of the flood-recovery journey.”
Ms Gillespie said people might not feel the emotional impact of the floods ‘for some time’ and increasing the number of people in communities who could provide support would make a ‘huge’ difference in a recovery process.
People keen to register for the seminar can email grampians.floodrecovery@dhs.vic.gov.au or phone the Department of Human Services Grampians region on 5333 6429.
General flood-recovery information is available on www.dhs.vic.gov/floods or 1300 307 512.
