Environmental water flowing down the Wimmera River during the next two months is designed to head off an annual threat of rising salt levels in the waterway while promoting healthy aquatic eco-systems.
The release is part of the river system’s Seasonal Watering Plan developed by the Victorian Environmental Water Holder, a new independent body managing the state’s environmental water entitlements, with Wimmera Catchment Management Authority.
Wimmera CMA chief executive David Brennan said the release would help maintain water quality coming into summer.
“The late winter and early spring dry spell reduced flows in the river, and there is a risk that salinity will increase at a critical time of year in the life cycle of many aquatic plants and animals,” he said.
