More than 700 people filed through the gates of Stawell’s Central Park to help raise more than $17,000 for cancer charities at a sports-themed event last month.
The friendly clash between Stawell Swifts and Stawell Warriors football, cricket and netball teams was boosted by other fun fund-raising activities including sports memorabilia auctions and raffles.
Event organisers Brad and Leisa Cassidy said they were ‘absolutely thrilled’ with the attendance figures and the money raised by all who attended.
“One thousand dollars was donated to Wimmera Against Cancer in Kids and the rest went to the Leukaemia Foundation,” Leisa said.
WACK is a regionally based group that provides support to families of children battling cancer and other illnesses.
Leisa, who has been supported as a patient by WACK in recent times, said the event raised more than $17,400.
She said the cricket in particular gave the crowd a few laughs and there was a constant flow of patrons to the market in the clubrooms.
“The raffles and one-off auction items raised a lot of interest too,” she said.
