Day to honour ANZAC sacrifice

Federal Member for Mallee John Forrest has reminded people across the region of the significance of ANZAC Day next week.
Mr Forrest said ANZAC Day was part of Australian history and culture and reminder that democratic heritage did not come cheaply.
“Thousands of men and women have made the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our way of life which is the envy of many nations around the world,” he said.
“In 2012, in the 97th year since the Australian landing at Gallipoli, we also commemorate the last shot fired on Lone Pine by Corporal Edgar Sydney Worrall of A Company, 24th Battalion AIF.
“In his diary that day Worrall wrote: ‘20th December 1915…A few minutes after midnight all departed except the absolutely last. Had to work like Trojans.  At 3am I fired the last shot at Lone Pine and we departed – reaching the beach in safety and got straight aboard.  Off to Lemnos!  Landed at night and camped at West Meudrus after the most trying 24 hours of my life. Would not have missed it for a million.’
“Worrall was a man of steel, an Australian Digger and an ANZAC. Sadly, Cpl Worrall, later promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, was killed in action during the Battle of Broodsiende in Belgium on October 14, 1917.”
Mr Forrest said ANZAC Day went beyond the anniversary of the April 25 landing in 1915.
“It is a day we remember all Australians who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations,” he said.
Mr Forrest also added that the centenary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli in three years’ time would be one of the most important events in Australian history.
“It will be a moment when all Australians will join together to reflect, remember and commemorate the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served in the Australian Defence Force.”
This year, Mr Forrest will  commemorate ANZAC Day with the Donald community.
Organisations across the Wimmera-Mallee are already busy preparing for ANZAC Day commemoration services. For further details contact RSL clubs or municipal offices.
