Truck congestion

SIR,- So the premier wants to double the trucks accessing Webb Dock, particularly at night to cope with the expected increase in containers moving through the port. What rubbish Premier.
We once had a useable and reliable rail system until Kennett sold it off, with his privatisation push. Since then the amount of trucks has nearly quadrupled to meet the demand.
The simple fact is, if this government was to take back full control of the railways, lines, rolling stock and associated infrastructure and upgrade and extend the system to cover the remotest parts of the state, we would not have as many trucks on the road and roads such as Williamstown Road and the Westgate and Western Ring road would not be clogged with B doubles day and night.
The only thing enticing more trucks onto our roads will lead to is a dramatic increase in road fatalities from overworking already stressed drivers of these heavy vehicles.
