Ebenezer future close to secure

The future of the Wimmera’s historic Ebenezer Mission at Antwerp is closer to being secure after key agencies signed a Memorandum of Understanding. Barengi Gadjin Land Council and the National Trust of Australia, Victoria, signed the document, officially recognising a need to preserve the site. The mission is one of the Wimmera’s most significant cultural and heritage sites, a reminder of an historic clash and melding of cultures with the arrival of Europeans in the region. The Moravian Church established the mission on Wotjobaluk country in 1859 in an effort to convert district people to Christianity while distributing rations. The mission closed in 1904. Barengi Gadjin Land Council chief executive Jim Golden-Brown said the Memorandum of Understanding marked a significant turning point in his organisation’s activities. “It shows that an organisation like the National Trust has confidence in our work and our future and we are very pleased to partner with them to make sure Ebenezer Mission is preserved for future generations,” he said. “We will be working with the National Trust to preserve the joint heritage of Ebenezer Mission, a site of great significance for Traditional Owners and the broader community alike. The National Trust is just as keen as we are to make sure this important part of our shared history is respectfully maintained.” The National Trust and Goolum Goolum Aboriginal Co-operative jointly own Ebenezer Mission and the land council maintains the site on behalf of the co-operative. National Trust chief executive Martin Purslow said the occasion was an important event for the national Trust. “We are delighted. It represents our commitment not only to working with the BGLC, but more broadly with the Aboriginal community in Victoria,” he said.
