Award-winning Melbourne composer Drew Lane will bring a high school musical production based on the township of Wickliffe to Lake Bolac later this year.
Lane, performing arts teacher at St Peter’s Primary School in East Bentleigh, will bring 45 students to perform ‘Somewhere To Fight For’ to Lake Bolac Memorial Hall on November 8.
The cast will perform a free schools-only show during the day and then present a ticketed show at 7.30pm with proceeds going towards the district community.
Lane grew up in Tarrington and attended school at Monivae College in Hamilton and gained inspiration for the musical while attending a school reunion last year.
“What impacted on me so much were the lack of life, and the incredible silence,” he said.
Here is a town which, 30 to 40 years ago, had a general store, post office, church, pub, school, and even a maternal centre.  Now, all of that is gone.  Even the pub only opens for a few hours on a Friday night.
“This once thriving community has now largely vanished. I started to think about what it would take to bring back to life a town than is struggling to survive.”
