Horsham’s Emma Rissman, 20, will take on the best hair-dressing apprentices in Australia in Sydney this weekend as part of 2012 biennial WorldSkills Australia championships.
She will be up against about 20 competitors in her category as she joins more than 500 apprentices, trainees and students and an enormous groundswell of spectators at Sydney Showground.
Rissman, a Gordon TAFE student and the institution’s 2011 hair-dressing apprentice of the year, is representing  Geelong region in what represents a whirlwind start to her career.
Over the three days of competition Rissman will have to complete a series of technical and skill-based tasks in pursuit of a ‘Best in Nation’ title. Officials will announce medallists at a closing ceremony on Sunday.
Rissman, who works at D’Coco Hair Studio in Horsham, will also be vying for a spot in the 2013 Team Australia Skillaroos which will head to Leipzig, Germany for the 42nd WorldSkills International Competition.
Rissman, busy packing early this week, said her main aim was to simply ‘get through the experience’.
“I’m not really going out to win it and really any success will simply be a bonus,” she said.
“Hair-dressing is just something I’ve always wanted to do and I’ve just followed my dreams. It’s been really great.”
This weekend’s national competition provides a platform for young Australians to test their skills, meet like-minded individuals and prove their commitment to their employer and chosen field.
Competitors have had to progress through a round of regional competitions to win selection for their region. Rissman won her regional title last year.
