Wimmera police have warned people hitting the road during the Christmas-New Year period that there will be a zero-tolerance attitude for anyone caught doing the wrong thing.
They have confirmed that police would ‘vigorously’ target speeding drivers and anyone driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs or while using distracting devices such as mobile phones.
They have also stressed the danger of fatigue on the roads and urged motorists to make sure they factored fatigue-management into their trips.
Sergeant Peter Hawkins from Northern Grampians Highway Patrol in Ararat said anyone who thought cruising through the region at 110 kph was acceptable risked running the zero-tolerance gauntlet.
“People in the past have believed they could put their cruise control on 110 and get away with it. Be warned. I can tell you that 110 is no longer acceptable and we will be enforcing lower-level speeds,” he said.
Horsham Highway Patrol’s Sergeant John McTaggart agreed, adding that police would install speed cameras throughout the Wimmera during January.
“It’s not just on the Western Highway. Extra hours have been allocated to speed cameras and they will be strategically placed in various locations.
“Motorists must obey road signs and be mindful of speed-limit changes, including sections of road that are under repair or construction. There’s a reason for 40-kilometre zones – people are working there.”
Sgt Hawkins: “Motorists must be vigilant and disciplined.”
Alcohol
The police officers stressed that driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs was also high on the zero-tolerance list.
