Horsham Yacht Club has planned further introductory sailing events after a ‘Tackers’ course at Green Lake attracted an enthusiast response from youngsters keen to learn the sport.
The club is now planning a ‘Tackers 2’ course, the next level in the program.
The four-day Yachting Victoria Tackers course, in association with Whitworths, the Boatshed and other sponsors last month involved basic sailing training for 21 children aged between seven and 12.
The Horsham club provided facilities and support for the two trainers, as well as meals and drinks for participants.
The youngsters took to the water for six-hour sessions in 12 Optimist training sailboats with a rescue boat and ancillary equipment also at the lake. Training was on the beach and on the water.
Club member Bob Wynne said the program was designed to encourage youngsters to get into the sport of sailing while at the same time increasing club membership.
