Horsham district Relay for Life organisers hope to reach a $1-million milestone when volunteers step out for the annual event at Coughlin Park next month.
The event’s publicity officer Rene Vivian revealed earlier this week that the Horsham leg of the event, on March 15 and 16 had raised more than $900,000 in the ongoing battle against cancer since it started in 2001.
She said this year’s relay, considering a record number of registered teams, had ‘every chance’ to create what would be a ‘wonderful’ achievement.
“We’re looking at this relay to surpass the million-dollar mark and it would be great if we could. All money goes to Cancer Council Victoria for continuing research into the fight against cancer,” she said.
Relay for Life is an overnight community event involving teams who relay non-stop to celebrate cancer survivors, remember people lost to cancer and fight back against the disease by raising money. It is a celebration of hope and solidarity.
Teams of 10 to 15 members challenge themselves to take turns to keep a baton moving in a walk or run and this year’s Horsham event has 44 registered teams, eclipsing a previous best of 37.
The enthusiasm for the event also means Horsham’s Coughlin Park is set to transform into a camp-ground with organisers expecting between 800 and 900 people at the reserve.
