Sport and spice

If anyone had suggested that passion was disappearing from regional sport, in particular football, then they only need be at Central Park in Stawell last weekend.
From all accounts, the melee that erupted at half time of a senior Wimmera Football League match was particularly nasty. We now wait for authorities to investigate the incident and throw the proverbial book at the offenders.
While thankfully far and few between, these types of incidents occasionally happen and rightfully draw condemnation from most.
Yet amid all the shock and disapproval from the regional football community there were the occasional obligatory comments between mates that harken back to the tribal origins of competitive contact sport.
“Finally, some spice back in local footy,” was one comment. And another: “That’s worth money at the gate.” And so on.
Simple satire? Of course, but it also hints heavily at how many of us yearn for passionate contest, whether it be philosophical, verbal or physical.
