Gersch: We need a ‘yes’ vote at September polls

Rural Councils Victoria chairman Cr Rob Gersch has spoken of a grass-roots need for Australians to vote ‘yes’ during a national referendum later this year.
Cr Gersch, reflecting on Hindmarsh Shire Council’s 2013-14 budget, said giving local government ‘financial recognition’ in the Australian Constitution was important.
He said it was crucial that rural municipalities had direct financial help from the Commonwealth.
“Local government only pulls in three percent of tax in Australia which is very low when you consider its contribution,” he said.
“What’s frustrating is that the State Government isn’t supporting the move when the truth is that without direct funding from the Federal Government, local government couldn’t survive.”
