Car or boat? It’s winner’s choice in fishing comp

The winner of The Weekly Advertiser Horsham Fishing Contest next March will have a choice of taking home either a car or boat.

Organisers of the annual Labour Day weekend event have made the decision based on the relatively equal value of both major prizes.

The change is also likely to ‘spice things up’ with the winning angler having the opportunity to make a last-minute decision on accepting his or her prize.

The runner-up will have to accept what the winner doesn’t choose which means they potentially have a chance to win a car for coming second.

Contest spokesman Kevin Dellar said the car and the boating package, headlining a rich and expanding prize pool, were both valued about $18,000 so it made sense to offer the winner a choice.

“We will call both first and second prize winners up during the presentations and the winner will be given the choice,” he said.

“The runner-up will get what’s left which is a prize valued the same as the winner. In other words, second prize has gone up in value from the $12,000 it was this year to $18,000. It’s a major win all round for everyone.”

Mr Dellar said the contest committee decision was also based on angler feedback with some people keen to have a car as first prize but others placing more value on a boating package.

“What better solution than to offer them both. It suddenly spices things up and adds extra value to catching that prize-winning fish,” he said.

Mr Dellar joked that, in theory at least, an angler who managed a double hook-up of big fish could win both prizes.
