Ararat forum outlines ICE dangers

A community forum in Ararat on June 4 will provide people with ‘accurate and useful’ information about use of the illicit drug Crystal methamphetamine, also known as ICE.

The event, free-of-charge at Ararat Performing Arts Centre at 7pm, will provide people with information on how to access advice and treatment.

It is an opportunity for people to develop an all-of-community response to prevent harm caused by ICE and other drugs and will follow a similar event in Warracknabeal tonight.

Organisers will also use the forum to investigate the potential of setting up a Grampians  network similar to Wimmera Drug Action Task Force.

Details in a ‘Trends in Alcohol and Drug Related Ambulance Attendances in Victoria 2012-13’ report shows a 198 percent increase in ICE-related call-outs in regional Victoria, with 231 call-outs in 2012-13 compared with 77 in 2011-12.

Organisers said it was important that communities were informed and aware and felt able to respond in terms of seeking advice, support and treatment.

The forum, led by radio personality Dan Glover, will include a story of a mother of an ICE addict. This will be followed by a question and answer session, where questions can be submitted in advance by email, handed in or sent through by text on the night.

Panel members include Ararat GP Dr Mark Deary, Ambulance Victoria clinical support manager Julian Cofield, drug and alcohol counsellor Russell Reid, Ararat Police Station commander Senior Sergeant Damian Ferrari and Wimmera Drug Action Taskforce co-ordinator Brendan Scale.

Mr Scale said that after alcohol and cannabis, ICE was the most common drug for which people sought treatment.

“We know that for every person seeking help for a drug, there are many others who may be using but do not seek treatment,” he said.

“ICE is an amphetamine and it is a unique drug because it can destroy lives rapidly.”
