Victorian Australian Greens leader Greg Barber believes the Wimmera-Mallee has all the natural assets it needs to generate its own power.

Mr Barber, who joined upper-house candidate for Western Victoria Lloyd Davies on a visit to Horsham, said the Wimmera-Mallee had ‘enormous’ potential to become self-sufficient with energy needs.

“In the Wimmera there is sun, wind, biomass and heat below the ground. There is enough renewable energy resources available to provide all local energy needs. We just have to get the policy settings right,” he said.

Mr Davies and Mr Barber said The Greens were closely following developments involving renewable energy projects across western Victoria as the Federal Government assessed a national Renewable Energy Target subsidy scheme.

Mr Barber also accused the Nationals of double standards in their approach to renewable energy.
