National gem spotlight

Horsham will host a national show for everything involving gems and minerals to fossils and meteorites at Easter next year.

Horsham and District Lapidary Club has won the right to host the 51st National Gem and Mineral Show, also called the Gemboree, which attracts enthusiasts from across the country and overseas.

Organisers expect between 3000 and 5000 people to attend the event on April 3, 4, 5 and 6 at Wimmera Events Centre at Longerenong.

The Gemboree rotates through the eastern states each year and Horsham hosted the event in 2009.

Event spokesman Des McKiernan, from Victorian Gem Clubs Association, said strong support for the 2009 show, excellent facilities and effective lobbying by Horsham and District Lapidary Club were key in Horsham securing the event.

He said he was confident the 2015 Gemboree would be bigger and better than in 2009.

“We are all volunteers and staging a national event such as this is a big responsibility,” he said.

“The help and support we are receiving from Horsham Rural City Council and the co-operation of the Wimmera Events Centre and the wider business community, makes our job so much easier and simply confirms Horsham as an ideal choice.”

Mr McKiernan added that students and teachers would appreciate aspects of the show that complemented educational studies involving geology and palaeontology.
