Healthcare cost

SIR,- Much is spoken about the aging population and the increasing cost to Medicare.

In the 1970s it only required one visit to see a medical practitioner to have a chest x-ray and find out the result of that x-ray.

In 2014 it takes four visits to see various medical practitioners to have a chest x-ray and find out the result of that x-ray.

Not only is it a four-fold increase in the cost to Medicare, but there is a total disregard for the inconvenience caused to the patient.

For me, the cost of a taxi for one visit to see a medical practitioner is more than $100. I don’t need the co-payment as well.

It is easier to blame the elderly for the Medicare blow-out instead of the multiple visits on surgery waiting lists.
