Workshop call to grasp Toolondo water issues

Independent candidate for Lowan Katrina Rainsford is planning a community forum at Balmoral in the next fortnight to help people grasp issues involving a drying Toolondo Reservoir.

Ms Rainsford, responding to a Save Toolondo rally in Horsham, said there was a need for greater communication and information involving circumstances surrounding the lake.

“Regional water-management involves a team effort and everyone needs to listen to what the locals and experts have to say. We don’t want policy based on a thought bubble coming out of Melbourne,” she said.

Toolondo supporters want authorities to divert 5000 megalitres from Rocklands Reservoir to prevent the lake becoming so shallow that it loses its socio and economic value as one of the premier trout-fishing lakes in Australia.

But Toolondo is considered a ‘dead’ storage because of difficulty authorities have in extracting water for stock and domestic supply. Under a bulk-entitlement agreement it only receives water when Rocklands Reservoir, its primary supply storage, reaches and maintains a designated trigger-release level.

Ms Rainsford, Southern Grampians Shire Council’s representative on a GWMWater recreation lakes and reservoirs group, said the forum would be at either Balmoral Hotel or Balmoral Golf Club.

“The issue is as much about Rocklands as Toolondo and is a major link for water supply and the whole water issue in the region,” she said.

“GWMWater is reviewing how it works and consults with community and it’s a good time for people to be engaged in planning for the future.”

Disregard

Victorian Water Minister Peter Walsh has blasted Labor’s Member for Bendigo East Jacinta Allan for the state opposition’s stand on Toolondo Reservoir.

He said Labor was ‘arrogantly’ disregarding western Victorian water security by promising to prioritise recreational fishing wishes above stock and domestic supply needs.

He said he was amazed at the ‘sheer stupidity’ of a statement that Labor would ‘ensure that the interests of recreational fishing were at the forefront of all considerations on water usage as it affects Lake Toolondo’.
