Organisers of Horsham’s annual Kannamaroo Festival have urged Wimmera people to use activities this weekend as a pre-Christmas catch-up with friends.

Festival spokesman Paul Latimer said the weekend festival had developed a tradition of providing a base for get-togethers as people and family members returned home for the Christmas break.

“There are often a lot of young people who are home from from university studies and others who have moved away who are back in town visiting their folks who use the occasion to meet up with old acquaintances,” he said.

“It makes for a great social and festive occasion.”

Kannamaroo Festival starts with a traditional street party from 6pm on Friday in Firebrace Street with various performers and community group displays and activities as well as carnival rides for children.

The event usually attracts several thousand people into Horsham’s Central Business District for the Friday night street party.

“We’ve been encouraged by the response of main-street retailers this year, many who have seen the trade potential of the event. My advice to everyone is to keep an eye out for pre-Christmas bargains and specials,” Mr Latimer said.
