Water diversion subject to police investigation

Police are investigating an incident that has led to the diversion of channel water into Toolondo Reservoir, south of Horsham.

GWMWater reported that someone had ‘interfered’ with an inlet structure off Rocklands channel.

The incident happened between December 11 and December 16.

GWMWater managing director Mark Williams said it was an offence under the Water Act for anyone to tamper with water corporation infrastructure.

“We simply cannot and will not tolerate people taking matters into their own hands. The matter has been put into the hands of the police,” he said.

GWMWater staff members discovered the partially opened gates on December 16. They repaired the gates within hours of the discovery.

Debate about maintaining water in Toolondo Reservoir, a popular recreation lake, has raged for the past 12 months.

Lobbyists advocating greater water security for the lake based on recreational, economic and social values, won Labor Party support before the State Election.
