Gap ready for all that jazz

Organisers of this year’s 29th Grampians Jazz Festival in Halls Gap next month are busy preparing for a big weekend of celebration.

The festival, starting on February 13, continues to blossom and is again set to draw thousands of people to the Grampians tourist hamlet.

Festival coordinator Peter Milburn said more than 3500 people attended the three-day festival which featured hundreds of performers and all types of jazz music.

“It’s just getting bigger and bigger every year. There are more bands coming, more people. There are more than 160 bands performing across the weekend,” he said.

“There are all forms of jazz, from traditional Dixieland to mainstream, modern and big band. We have the usual street parade on the Saturday morning which is quite spectacular with people getting dressed up and having a great time.

“We basically take over the town. It’s a real mix, a great party atmosphere from go to whoa. People just keep coming back and keep bringing their friends. They have a such a great time and word quickly spreads. It’s a festival in the true sense of the word.”

Organisers have had to deal with rain, hail, heat, fire, floods and drought in presenting the annual festival and this year will recognise the 50th birthday of Jacquie Shaw.

Birthday history

Jacquie Shaw’s 21st birthday party at Roses Gap in 1986 started the idea for a jazz festival.

Organisers have urged people to make the most of bus services, to meander throughout the town and catch up with friends.

They have also encouraged patrons to dress up and join the street parade. Colours this year are red, white and black.

The festival will also be making use of Halls Gap’s new Community Hub.
