Mine study wins council award

A study into the future for Stawell Gold Mine’s site that led to plans for an international scientific laboratory has earned Northern Grampians Shire Council its second major award in three months.

New Discoveries – Golden Opportunities for Stawell’s Future won an Innovative Management Category at 2015 LGPro Awards for Excellence.

The award follows acknowledgement at 2014 National Awards for Excellence in Economic Development in Darwin in November.

Northern Grampians Mayor Murray Emerson said the annual LGPro Awards were designed to promote and celebrate outstanding achievements by both individuals and teams  in the Victorian Local Government sector.

“This is a significant accomplishment for the council’s Strategic Project Team which has been working extremely hard on the Golden Opportunities project and are at a point where they have begun planning for the construction of an underground physics laboratory at the Stawell Gold Mine site,” he said.

“When we first began to investigate future options for the site, we never imagined that the 200 kilometres of disused mine shafts and tunnels could be used for a major scientific breakthrough.
