Soldiers’ stories

HISTORY IN WORDS: Margaret Beattie with her book about soldiers from Mt Cole and Warrak district, which will be officially launched at Warrak Hall on March 15.

The stories of young soldiers from the Mt Cole and Warrak district, east of Ararat, feature in a new book called Mt Cole/Warrak – the War Years 1914-18.

The book, by Margaret Beattie, will have an official launch at Warrak Hall at 1.30pm on March 15.

The tiny district provided 50 young volunteers, the sons and grandsons of pioneering families, blacksmiths, labourers, orchardists and farmers, for overseas service during the First World War. Thirteen lost their lives and 37 returned home, some with injuries that would affect them and their families for the rest of their lives.

Beattie tells each soldier’s story through family recollections, diaries, photographs, postcards, letters and newspaper stories as well as war-service records.
