$600,000 donation

A $600,000 gift from Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation has wiped off more than half the money required to complete Horsham’s Town Hall redevelopment project.

A community fundraising effort, seeking donations from organisations, businesses and individuals, has a $1-million target.

Geoff Handbury, now of Hamilton but maintaining a strong affinity with Horsham, said the donation would go specifically to upgrading Horsham Regional Art Gallery, part of the town hall project.

“I believe the gallery is really important, particularly from an education perspective,” he said.

“It is important that it is restored in a way that is inclusive of everyone in the community. The public needs to understand that it is there for them, not simply a select few.

“When I was on the land, Horsham was our town. I  have a soft spot for Horsham and its community. I’m really excited with what they are doing with the gallery. I also feel very rewarded to be part of it.”

Mr Handbury, an owner of The Weekly Advertiser and radio stations 3WM and MIXXFM as part of ACE Radio Broadcasters, added that the donation reflected the depth in which the Horsham district community had supported the ACE network’s newspaper and radio operations.

“It is through community support that we can do this. In a sense, we’re giving back to the community what it has already given to us,” he said.

Horsham Mayor Mark Radford, in welcoming the donation, said the gift was indicative of Mr Handbury’s ongoing commitment to Horsham.
