Ballarat oncologist Professor George Kannourakis and Rupanyup-born VFL footballer and long-time businessman Stewart Gull will be guest speakers at a Wimmera Legacy dinner at Horsham Golf Club on May 22.

Professor Kannourakis, a highly credentialed cancer expert and clinical haematologist in Ballarat since 1992, helped establish the community-based Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute of which he is director.

The institute, with 15 scientists and four support staff, is an evolving specialist centre undertaking state-of-the-art cancer research in Ballarat.

Key work at the centre involves establishing how the immune system can be used to attack cancer cells.

The research institute will work closely with a planned Wimmera Cancer Centre.

Stewart Gull played 87 VFL games and kicked 157 goals for South Melbourne in the 1970s. A licensed estate agent, he is director of Country Club Villages and has many successful business enterprises.
