Rowing club shines at Masters event

Horsham City Rowing Club performed strongly at Rowing Victoria State Masters Championships at Nagambie.

Five master rowers from the club claimed one gold and two bronze medals at the meeting. The races marked the conclusion of the 2014-15 rowing season.

Club captain Bruce McInnes said success was partly due to Horsham Rural City Council delaying work on Wimmera River  infrastructure which allowed competitors to keep training.

“We’ve attended 10 regattas this season, starting with the World Rowing Masters Regatta in Ballarat back in October. Since then, we have had both junior and senior athletes competing at venues across the state. Our victories over the weekend have brought our final medal tally for the season to 28,” he said.

The mixed quad, rowed by Scott Johns, Lindy Cross, Bruce McInnes and Christine Hallinan, won bronze, missing out by a narrow margin to claim first place in the handicapped events.

Lindy Cross: “The other crews were given a head start, and we had to chase them down.  It makes for very exciting racing.”

Sian Blohm crewed with Wendouree-Ballarat’s Narelle Burnside to take home a gold medal.

In a Victorian first, they raced in the adaptive event.
