Booze bus blitz

By LAUREN HENRY

Drivers of trucks, light vehicles and family cars were among about 1500 tested for alcohol and drugs in the Wimmera this week.

No one was spared to the random testing as the booze bus visited various Wimmera towns, including Ararat on Monday, pictured, and Horsham yesterday.

Officers from Victoria Police’s Road Police Drug and Alcohol Section from Melbourne joined Wimmera police to drive home a road safety message, targeting drink and drug- driving.

Senior Sergeant Guin Cleminson, traffic and proactive policing advisor for the region, said having the booze bus visit the Wimmera provided a strong, visible presence to deter people from driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

“It is about detection, but more than anything it’s about deterrence,” she said.

“People will see the bus in the region and say ‘oh the booze bus is in town’, then they might think twice about drink-driving.”

Sen Sgt Cleminson said drivers were being breath-tested for alcohol, but also tested for drugs, via a saliva swab.
