Cross dress for cancer

The Morrow family is aiming to raise $20,000 by riding about 1500 kilometres along the Murray River.

Cross Dress for Cancer will be led by Wade, Shannon and Daniel Morrow, joined by friends Matt Cross, Chris Roche, Ben Consedine, Travis Kerr, Colin Kemp and Andrew Sanders, while Gavin Morrow will drive the support bus.

The crew will start at Thredbo, New South Wales, and travel through the mouth of the Murray River in Goolwa, South Australia.

The six-day ride in October will involve the riders, on postie bikes, stopping at various places along the way to raise money.

All money raised will be donated to the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute, which is headed by Professor George Kannourakis – a man well known to many Wimmera cancer patients.

Gavin and Wade Morrow said the ride was the brainchild of Shannon Morrow, following the passing of Wimmera businessman Kevin Morrow last year.

“Shannon felt that because dad did so much for other people that we should continue to do something honouring his name,” Gavin said.

“Cancer patients, along with their family, go through a turbulent time, sometimes not knowing which direction they are going, which made us think of the Murray River so we decided to follow that

“The cross dressing was basically something different to make us stand out, that’s our excuse anyway.

“All the riders have been touched with cancer in some way and share in the passion to not only go on the ride but assist in raising money beforehand.”

Wade said the ride would involve speaking engagements at RSL’s, a breakfast function at a McDonalds, lunchtime BBQ in a park, quiz night at a pub and more.

“The important factor with this cause is that while donating to any charity is worthwhile, Wimmera people will see a direct benefit back to our community from the cancer patients that George treats,” he said.
