Emma Kealy calls for State Government contribution to Wimmera Cancer Centre

Member for Lowan Emma Kealy has continued to urge the State Government to ‘come to the party’ with its contribution to a Wimmera Cancer Centre.

The Federal Government pledged $1-million in March,  with Prime Minister Tony Abbott making a special trip to Horsham to make the announcement.

Federal Government money for the cancer centre, in Horsham, is now in the project’s bank account.

Ms Kealy said she had an encouraging meeting with State Health Minister Jill Hennessy about the project and was confident the government was ‘seriously’ considering a funding arrangement.

“I’ve been told the State Government is looking very closely at funding the project, which is extremely encouraging,” she said.

“I would like to think it would come sooner, rather than later. In fact, a matching $1-million is an amount that should be able to fit into current budget costings.

“I’m urging the State Government, now that it has a good understanding of the value and size of the project, to follow through and back such a worthy project.

“More than 40 percent of people seeking cancer treatment are travelling outside the region which, considering we have some of the highest rates of cancer in the country, is simply not good enough.”
