After a few throws at the stumps, McKenzie Creek trainer Paul Preusker hopes Magic Consol will deliver his first hometown cup on Friday.
The six-year-old gelding finished a disappointing fifth in last year’s $50,000 Millers Horsham Cup, but Preusker believes he is in a better position to win it this time around.
“He ran a cheeky race last year,” he said.
“He wasn’t mentally prepared for it, but the timing is better this year. We’ve got him as good as we’re going to get him.”
Preusker said the Horsham Cup was a tough one to win.
“I’ve run three second places, so it would be nice after a few goes at it to win it,” he said.
Magic Consol will be accompanied by experienced jockey – and Preusker’s partner – Holly McKechnie.
McKechnie has ridden the son of Consolidator in his past three starts, including a Sheep Hills Cup victory at Warracknabeal on September 6. She also knows what it is like to win a cup on her home track, winning three of them aboard Telopea Downs galloper Texan Warney.
