All eyes were on the glamour horse Philadelphia Man as he crossed the finish line to claim victory over stablemate Restrepo in the 2015 Horsham Pacing Cup.
Eight metres away in third place, a 2-1 chance called Arden Rooney gave barely a hint of greater glory to come.
Leviathan owners Merv and Meg Butterworth had sent their handy pacer across the ditch just four days earlier to the Great Western stables of Kerryn Manning, to be trained for an assault on the rich Victorian Country Cups and Summer Of Glory carnivals.
The following week at Hamilton, Arden Rooney finished second, albeit 20 metres away from the ultra-impressive cup winner Restrepo. At his next outing he finished a handy fifth to Bit Of A Legend in The Pure Steel at Melton, beaten by 5.3 metres.
A fortnight later Arden Rooney and Kerryn Manning shocked most punters with their 80-1 victory in the $400,000 Hunter Cup at Melton – similar to this year’s Melbourne Cup – and in quick succession saluted in the Terang and Geelong cups, Swan Hill FFA, Melton FFA and Mildura Cup.
