Horsham Hornets kept their Country Basketball League finals hopes alive with a convincing 41-point win over Terang on Saturday night.
The Hornets had the Tornadoes’ measure early in what was at times a scrappy affair, but Terang refused to concede.
Horsham led by eight points at the first change and 13 points at half-time, but it was a 28-to-18-point third quarter that gave the Hornets the breathing room they needed to turn the game over to the team’s juniors.
Led by James Hallett – with a game-high 23 points – the Hornets’ younger brigade showcased its skills in front of an appreciative home crowd in the last quarter.
Coach Cam Bruce, 12 points, said it was great to finish the year on a high.
“It was a must-win game for us in terms of finals,” he said.
“If we lost, we were out, so it was good to finish the year on a positive note and now we can look forward to next year.
“The young guys played really well, particularly James, who keeps getting better and better. He’s been training with us and doing really well over the past few weeks, so if we’re lucky enough to play finals, it puts him in a good position.”

Bruce said the team would enjoy a break over Christmas and New Year before returning for its last game of the home-and-away season against bottom side Timboon on January 10.
“To make finals we need to win that game as well, but we also need to hope for another team to lose its games,” he said.
“It’s not ideal, but it’s the position we’ve found ourselves in this year.”
