With only days until the fat man in a red suit turns up, it’s time to turn our attention to the region’s best prospects for a family fish and the chance to get children to test new gear.
Many family-friendly options are available and there’s some great fish on offer with a little bit of preparation.
Boat or bank, people need to be careful around waterways. Remain courteous and most importantly observe safety rules and regulations. Many anglers run the gauntlet of fishing without wearing their life jackets or PFDs.
Also keep in mind with lower water levels, many submerged obstacles such as logs and stumps are starting to appear, which can not only damage boats and motors but injure boaters and their crew.
Murray Cod limits: Remember the size limit in Victoria and NSW is now 55 to 75 centimetres. Bag limits apply of one fish in rivers and two in lakes.
Lake Fyans
After a successful day at Fyans earlier filming an episode for Merv Hughes Fishing, it was exciting to see so many good fish on offer.
Trolling and casting were the best methods, using small hardbody lures and soft plastics to land three brown trout and six rainbows in two short sessions as well as nice redfin. With the predicted holiday traffic at Fyans, there will be many stories told of great fish in the coming weeks. Bait wise you can’t go past mudeye fished under a bubble float for best results.
Lake Toolondo
With low water levels at Toolondo, launching and retrieving has become difficult and a four-wheel drive vehicle is a must. There’s still some great fish in the lake but the hot weather will take its toll over summer.
