Mixed results for Horsham at Bendigo Junior Classic
Horsham Hornets enjoyed mixed results at the Bendigo Junior Classic tournament at the weekend after taking on teams from across the state.
The Hornets under-14 division three team basked in grand final glory after defeating Bendigo in the grand final, 28-25.
Hugh Bond top-scored for the Hornets with an 11-point performance.
The Horsham youngsters made it through their pool matches undefeated, beating Melton, Castlemaine, Colac, Echuca and Bendigo to earn a finals berth.
The Hornets triumphed over Southern Peninsula 37-20 to snare a spot in the decider.
Horsham’s under-16 boys team fared the next best, making it through to the semi-final stage on Monday.
They got off to a tough start, losing to Colac 26-39 in round one, before bouncing back with a strong 51-22 victory over Bacchus Marsh.
On Sunday, the Hornets defeated Geelong by 11 points before losing to Bendigo by three points in a thriller.
In their last match on Sunday, they got over the top of Ballarat in another nail-biter, 37-35 to proceed to the third round.
Their 20-point win over Kyneton on Monday morning set up a semi-final showdown with Melton in the afternoon.
The Hornets battled hard but were unable to overcome the Thoroughbreds, going down by six points, 56 to 50.
