Western Phantoms in opening contest

FULL VOLLEY
By DAVID BERRY
A thorough pre-season preparation will stand all three Western Phantoms teams participating in the opening state league round on Saturday in good stead.
Two training camps and match play at Warrnambool has all players ready to start the season in a positive manner.
The premier men will play Southern Cross Cobras with much the same team that won four games in 2015.
The group will benefit from experiences gained last year and will give itself every chance to beat the Cobras.
Volleyball Horsham members Cam Robinson, with setting duties, and Nick Adamson and Jayden McQueen, pass-hitters will play critical roles in this team.
The teams played a draw at Warrnambool and how well the Phantoms block the Cobras’ attack will be the difference between winning and losing.
Reserves women
The new-look reserves women’s team will have two very winnable games against Monash and Renegades.
The girls played both teams at Warrnambool, beating Renegades and drawing with Monash, but will be without unavailable Volleyball Horsham members Alysha Liston, Kara Johnson and Maddie Buckley.
But the team will be buoyed by the return of reigning Most Valuable Player Siobhan Robinson and the talented Molly Hobbs.
With good structure despite missing three walk-up starts, the girls are expected to do well.
The team will welcome young setter Georgia Eason into the team who will be making her state league debut, but has impressed at trial camps and Warrnambool.
Giving the team blocking strength will be Warrnambool’s Hollie Kennedy. Kennedy has experience in the SA State League with Norwood Bears.
Division two women
Chloe Brown will be the only Volleyball Horsham member in the new-look division two team as it takes on Monash Uni One and Two.
Brown will be a key player, whether she is taking the middle blocking position or as an outside hitter, and will be joined by some of the best young talent from Bendigo.
