Ararat Harness Racing Club, Ararat Turf Club score funding for upgrades

Two of Ararat’s racing codes will benefit from funding boosts courtesy of the Victorian Racing Industry Fund.
Racing Minister Martin Pakula announced $24,000 for Ararat Harness Racing Club during a visit to the Wimmera on Friday.
He also announced $14,500 for Ararat Turf Club.
Ararat Harness Racing Club secretary Michele Berry said the club was pleased to receive the funding, which would be put towards new asphalt in the racing stalls.
She said the club and Harness Racing Victoria would split the remaining cost of the project, estimated at about $48,000.
“There is a lot of dust in the stalls, particularly on race days,” she said.
“The project will decrease health and safety issues associated with slipping and will also reduce the amount of dust generated.”
Ms Berry said work on the project was expected to start in June.
“It was great to have the minister come and visit to see what we will do with the money,” she said.
“Whenever government ministers come up it shows they take an interest in country clubs and our events.”
Of the Ararat Turf Club funding, $12,300 will be put towards the cost of new perimeter fencing, with $2200 to be used to update public amenities. Racing Victoria has also provided $11,000 towards the upgrades, with the club contributing more than $3500.
The fencing will improve safety for horses, jockeys and the public, with a chain-mesh fence to prevent runaway horses from reaching nearby roads. Mr Pakula said work to install the almost two-metre high fence around the existing horse float car park was set to start this week.
