Plaudits for Wimmera AFL draftees Tom Williamson, Jarrod Berry

North Ballarat Rebels team-mates Tom Williamson and Jarrod Berry are the toast of Wimmera football after winning selection in the AFL draft.
Berry joined Brisbane as pick 17 and Williamson found his way onto Carlton’s senior list as pick 61.
Ararat Football Netball Club president David Jennings, who in the 1980s and ’90s played alongside Williamson’s father Allister as part of a potent Wimmera league midfield, said the Rats were proud of Tom and his family.
“Tom is a hard a nut who loves the contest and had always been driven to succeed,” he said.
“It’s a tremendous accomplishment and always been something he wanted to achieve. He left no stone unturned to get there.
“And well done too to Jarrod Berry. It’s just terrific for the football region as a whole and hopefully a few more can come through.
“It shows dreams can be achieved with hard work and application.”
Berry, who started with Horsham Saints and captained the under-18 Rebels and Vic Country teams, is listed as a 191-centimetre midfielder-defender.
The Lions have described him as ‘a versatile athletic type who plays with a great team ethos and leadership’.
His efforts at an AFL draft ‘combine’ where prospective draftees went through a variety of skill and physiological tests also impressed the Lions.
Williamson, who at 190cm would tower over his rover father, is also listed as a defender-midfielder.
Williamson’s endurance, agility and overall fitness at the draft combine was also profound.
The Blues described him as a skilful player who could break games open with his speed: “He shows good awareness, footy smarts and is a prolific ball-winner.”
Williamson’s sisters are also prominent at sport with Jessica winning Ararat’s A Grade netball best and fairest award last season, Lauri also a talented netballer and Cortney an outstanding basketballer in Geelong.
