Wimmera waterways primed for Murray cod season opening

Tomorrow brings the opening of Murray cod season. Taylors Lake and Lake Charlegrark are the main fishing locations for this fish, although anglers are also catching a few at Rocklands Reservoir.
There have been many reports of small cod caught from Taylors in the past month as a by-catch when fishing for yellowbelly.
The $150,000 16th annual Cod Classic is on at Lake Mulwala. Lake Eildon is also fishing well and is Victoria’s only destination where cod can be targeted and kept all year round.
Back in the Wimmera, there were 22 senior and two junior Stawell and District Angling Club members who tried their luck at Taylors Lake.
The result was just seven fish being weighed in, but a yellowbelly weighing 1.667 kilograms was enough to give Ron Kewish top honours for the heaviest fish award.
Snow Perry just missed top spot with two yellowbelly weighing 1.648kg.
Doug Collins continued his good form, catching a yellowbelly at 1.161kg for third.
The club’s final competition for 2016 will be a one-day competition from 6am to 1pm at Lake Fyans on Sunday. Weigh-in at the clubhouse at 1.15pm.
Wimmera Offshore Anglers Christmas competition at Portland attracted 26 seniors and two juniors.
Don Schultz and Brendan Ellis caught a good bag of flathead and Greg and Lil Schwarz caught their bag of whiting. Mark Eldridge won the senior competition with a 327g whiting from Lis Schwarz, 328g whiting. Brendan Ellis was third with his 886g flathead.
James McNeil won juniors with a 702g flathead and a 1.112kg salmon from Riley Olston with a 651g coutta.
