The Horsham team responsible for setting a world record for people taking part in a ‘Nutbush’ dance, will attempt to break its own record in November to coincide with the nomination of the 2015 event for National Tidy Town Awards.
Horsham created the record in 2015 with 254 dancers, dancing for five minutes and 15 seconds and there have since been three attempts around the world to beat the mark.
Event manager and Horsham councillor Mark Radford said the Nutbush Horsham Team was keen to ‘raise the bar’ and aim for 400 to 500 Dancers in 2017.
“The quality of the dancing is what has set Horsham apart. We only had two dancers disqualified last time. To keep the record, we need to have another attempt,” he said.
“Many people have said, since the 2015 event, that they should have had a go and been a part of it. This is their big opportunity.”
The Nutbush dance is a form of rock ‘n’ roll line dancing that evolved in nightclubs in the early 1980s to the Tina Turner song of the same name.
The minimum age for dancers taking part in this year’s event is anyone from grade two level in primary school. Last time, the most senior Nutbush dancer was 90.
As part of the build-up, organisers will run dance classes leading up to the event during October & November.
Cr Radford said dancers needed to attend at least one class to make sure everybody was doing the ‘correct’ version of the Nutbush dance.
“Once they know the steps and can dance for the full five minutes and 15 seconds, there will receive their official ‘Nutbush Dancing World Record Attempt’ T-Shirt.
The attempt is being planned November 26 between 5pm and 6pm at a location yet to be confirmed. Entries open in September. More details can be found at www.nutbushhorsham.com.au
