Embracing social diversity and the importance of community inclusion are among the take-home lessons of Horsham Arts Council’s latest production.
The council will present Tony Award-winning rock musical Rent in Horsham Town Hall from October 27 to November 4.
Rent features a group of impoverished young artists struggling to survive and create a life in New York City’s East Village.
Rent became a cultural phenomenon after it opened on Broadway in 1996 and Horsham Arts Council director Debbie Boutcher believes the show’s themes are just as relevant today.
“Rent deals with issues such as drug use, sexuality, homelessness, suicide and death,” she said.
“It’s like looking through a window into the life of these people back in the time it was written.
“It deals with a lot of general conditions of the time that are still relevant today.
“The show has funny moments as well, because life has funny moments.”
Rent, loosely based on Puccini’s opera La Boheme, follows the ups and downs of a friendship group.
“It looks at their struggles,” Boutcher said.
“Ultimately, it’s love that gets them through – being connected and having a sense of community.”
Boutcher said live theatre was able to address issues in a way that was unique and creative.
“When something happens on stage it become all that more real to people watching it,” she said.
“Social diversity and inclusiveness within the community is a big theme within our show.
“We hope the show gets across to the audience that a lot of people in our community are dealing with some of these issues and need our support and acceptance.”
Boutcher said Horsham Rural City Council had provided the arts council with a grant to incorporate social awareness and inclusiveness into the show.
“When we put our proposal for the show together we decided to bring in community organisations,” she said.
“We will use the grant to promote headspace Horsham, Grampians Community Health and Uniting Wimmera in our program. We will also put out a flyer showcasing the services available, which people will be able to take home from the show.”
Boutcher said preparations were progressing well, with the cast completing its first dress rehearsal on Sunday.
“The people in this show are amazing,” she said.
“The vocals are strong, the acting is phenomenal. I couldn’t have asked for a better cast.” Boutcher paid tribute to her creative team, including assistant director and choreographer Loucas Vettos, vocal director Maddi Ostapiw and musical director Mark Block.
“They are doing a wonderful job,” she said.
Rent opens on Friday, October 27 at 8pm. Other evening shows will be on October 28 and November 2, 3 and 4, with a matinee on October 29.
Tickets cost $30 for adults and $25 concession and are available online at www.horshamtownhall.com.au or at the town hall box office.
